THE SPRINGER YOU SHOULD KNOW

An English Springer Spaniel is a dog of medium height and weight. A female Springer weighs between 40-45 lbs. and stand between 18-19 inches in height. A male weighs in at 45-50lbs and stands 19-20 inches tall.  Their coat is long and glossy and needs grooming in order to keep out mats and keep up their wonderful appearance. They are very intelligent, intuitive, energetic and loyal dogs in the sporting breed. They carry themselves with confidence and have a merry personality which their wagging tail will give away them away. Though Springers were bred years ago to hunt, the bench (show) springer has evolved to become one of many talents. The bench/show Springer is critiqued for their body structure and appearance. Their agility of movement and speed makes them fantastic dogs which are quick to master the agility ring. A good obedience training program is a worthwhile investment for anyone purchasing a puppy.  A well-trained dog makes a more enjoyable friend/pet. Springers are very quick to learn so you may like to try your hand in obedience trials or the newest type of obedience class called rally.   Because of their fantastic natural sense of smell, you may use your Springer for hunting and field games though there are two distinct types of English Springers, field and bench. Don’t rule out a Springer for search and rescue and as a therapy dog.  Your new pet may live in an apartment but you should plan on daily walks and watch out if you pass by a creek or pool as your new friend loves the water!
